What can I say - I am a Robbins junkie to the end, and this is one of my favorites, and the one I started with...

This had a profound effect on me in college. I'm sure it warped my brain forever - but in a good way!

It took me a good three-fourths of this book to really start enjoying whatever it is that Robbins was trying to get at. I think that I was just going through the motions of reading up until the point where Alobar's lover disappears/joins the \"ether\" if you will. After that, I was totally interested in the plot and invested in what happened to the characters (though they are always more entertaining than they are relatable). I think I was a little bent on disliking this book, but it turned out being my favorite of the three \"meaning of life\" books that I read this last month. IIt made me think about what it is to lead a fulfilling life.

I am not such a fan of this novel. I may venture into Robbins work another day but this novel just did not satisfy me. I felt that there were too many subplots and certain subplots dragged on a little too long. In fairness I was eager to finish this book in order to move on to other books on my shelf, so I saw myself reading it as a chore and not because I couldn't wait to turn the page

Tom Robbins is simply amazing. This is the first book that I've read by him and I was astounded. His work is just so much fun and he offers such a creative and original plot with a great use of character and vocabulary.

Another great read by Tom Robbins which can only be described as about immortality and perfume.

This book is so weird. It moves pretty fast, at least in the beginning, but still wonderful.

This is by far the best of Tom Robbins' books. The writing is fluid, clear, and grabs you by the throat with a promise not to let go or ease up. Robbins' weaving of fact and fiction is so seamless, so perfect that at times I had to stop and remind myself that I wasn't in the book myself.
Wild and fun, mind-opening and educating...just as a Tom Robbins novel should be.

My second favorite book of all time. It mixes philosophy and perfume and immortality. What's not to love?

Omigod! Such a good book. There are four stories that twine into to one magnificent, hilarious epic. Read it, and love Robbins for ever.

Read this -- and a lot of his other books -- in my early 20s and loved them all. I particularly enjoyed the "bean King" portion of the story and the explanation of the different "notes" in a perfume. I wonder how he'd hold up two decades later?
